For quite some time I have been thinking about the amount of solo and pair mountain bikers in the Grantham area. To me mountain biking should not be about just going as fast as one can over rough terrain but to have fun, what better way to have fun than to share it with other like minded people. Road cyclists have a club called "The Witham Wheelers" where as mountain bikers do not.
I love to get out riding, sometimes thrashing the trails, sometimes just to get some air into my lungs... Problem is, if you're not thrashing the trails it can get a little monotonous on your own..... I think that's one of the hardest things I find in mountain bikes, finding someone to ride and have a laugh with around here! If Grantham had a club like the Wheelers for mountain bikers,(or even just a group of like minded people that exchanged mobile numbers!) finding people to ride with wouldn't be a problem, and best of all you would know first hand your fitness and abilities.
On Sunday I have arranged to meet 'ithinkyoulfindimperry' to do the viking challenge route. I'm kinda looking forward to it, but I am very apprehensive about it too, we haven't ridden together before or even spoken, he has the total advantage over me as he knows kind of what to expect from my fitness levels from reading my blog and also knows what I look like...I have no clue as to whether or not he is just going to wipe the floor with me and leave me for dead...'Please be kind Perry.. :-{'
I have ridden with quite a few people in the past from one end of the spectrum to the other. Such as, riding with someone with less fitness and ability than myself to riding with someone that I cannot in a month Sundays keep up with! Obviously this can be quite embarrassing depending on what end of the spectrum we are talking about!
One way to over come this scenario is to build a group of like minded people for a Sunday morning ride. Or for someone with a bit of clout to build a club like the wheelers. I'm more for keeping it casual as everyone has commitments of one form or another and also different riding techniques and pleasures but if there is anyone out there who fancies getting together then let me know and we could see about arranging something whether it be on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis depending on what each individual is after...I'm even up for the kids coming along at times too if you think they will enjoy it!!!
I need a picture of a group of mountain bikers for this post, and yet I have not got one!!

The annual viking challenge will soon be upon us and I am planning on riding the 50k loop, so some serious miles need to be done by me! As this blog has some, (maybe 1 local reader!)
I am taking this opportunity to ask if you would like to join me as I am feeling very lonely when I do these events. :-) Seriously, if you are up for a laugh and don't mind stopping at all refreshment points let me know..
So what is the viking challenge? It's a 30 or 50k mountain bike event starting and finishing at Redmile primary school, Belvoir road, Redmile, Leicestershire.
The viking challenge is a sponsored event and the organizers choose the charity for the monies raised. Half of the monies go to the chosen charity and the other half goes to the Redmile school.
What I love about this event is it's open to all rider types, even children can and do ride it! You do get the racer's, but mostly it's family and the weekend warrior's such as myself who ride it. Everyone has their own reason for riding the viking challenge be it, breaking the land speed record for riding through mud, raising sponsor money for the event or other, or just for the sheer hell of it like me!
I find it to be a very long day in the saddle as I ride from home to Redmile, do the event then ride home again :-/ This is why I say some serious miles need to be done before Sunday 4th October arrives!

I have been away with the family, getting back last Saturday. So I would like to apologize to all those entrecarders dropping on me for the lack of return drops!
Mountain biking has been really slow since I got back, because as I understand it, the weather has done nothing but rain for almost 2 weeks now. And the sunshine that we have had, has been cut short by more sodding rain as it is right now!
This is my excuse for not posting anything on my blog, due to having nothing to say!!!
As I have had almost 2 weeks off work, the lack of riding has caused lack of sleep and aches and pains... So far in 2 weeks I have had 3 bike rides totaling 3 uncomfortable hours in the saddle. It's times like these that my weaknesses show up with inconsistent riding, and I feel the need to go back to basics!
I'm sat here right now thinking about my next sentence/paragraph, and cannot help but turn my attention to the living room window, BLOODY WEATHER!!!
Although I am moaning in this post, I did manage to get out today for 2 hours, so I should feel comfortable in bed tonight! It was a strange day... I woke up about 7-7:30am to a really dull threatening morning. By 10am, the sun was shining so strong my leg felt like it was burning by the rays through the living room window. I wanted to get out then but thought better off leaving it until the afternoon. At least I can have a drink outside the Rutland arms on my way back without having to rush back. Bugger that, I'll sit inside, "too many Wasps for my liking"!
Normally I would have a pint of Fosters or a coke, but as I have put myself on a more water diet. I decided on a can of Monster energy drink, "good start"! I must admit though, I felt a lot better on my way home!!!
As I got back onto the canal towpath, I started to crank those pedals hard and fast, into a face full of thunder flies, "cough, spit, snot" as the black clouds started to lurk above me. As I rode along the towpath I was forced to reduce my speed as lots of ramblers were ahead of me. I could feel the odd heavy drop of rain on me as I made my way through them. I just managed to get back into my village when, "it started to piss it down" this was at 3pm and it has not stopped since!

About me
This blog is all about my life… my life of mountain biking and ideas I’ve acquired through the years. As an average everyday mountain biker, the learning doesn’t stop. I try to feed my mind in my own little way by writing and promoting this blog. I would like to share what I have learned through this blog with you. Let this blog be an additional resource for your mountain bike needs, and maybe you'll find some much needed ideas you may not have given much thought to before.
My name is Paul Walton, an engineer slave and spare time mountain biker/blogger. Blogging about mountain bikes has become and undying passion, spending most weekends and afternoons on the internet blogging. As well as riding bikes, writing about it also is what I love to do.
