Oh and an old retro 'pub' bike. I would also like a BMX...

The most fun thing about mountain biking is progressing your skills, and because different bikes have different skills associated with them, having a range of them to work with enables riders to develop more skills without simply having to constantly try to go faster or jump bigger on the same bike. Tanya, maybe you should try another bike too? Get a full suss and have a good ride, you'll see the difference! And don't just borrow your hubby's as-is, it'll be the wrong setup. Not including the other halfs couple of bikes . Different bikes for different uses . You wouldnt get very far trying to cut a steak with a spoon and a knife wouldnt be very fun with soup . The full suss will be comfortable and less physically demanding over a day but boring and numb for a thrash in the woods . A hardtail is quick but unlikely to win a dh world cup but still offers a bit more relaxation than a rigid which gives more of a pure experience . An 8" travel bike wouldnt keep up very well with the local roadie club so a road bike is added to the collection . Or more often than not two road bikes , one for going quick and one for when its raining . Dont forget the bike that takes you to work , that one needs to be ugly enough not to get stolen but good enough as it gets used a lot , then theres the puncture 5mins before you head off in the morning so good to have two of these . How about a bike that you couldnt afford many years ago but now can , built with mostly NOS parts , inevitably its too nice to use often so another appears for more regular use . So really he has a lot of restraint only having a couple , i know plenty of people with upward of 10 .

Only 3!
